The problem is that many of the mods that you get in your main research do not work with the secret tech units and vice verse, so, I feel it is better to get the higher tier units from your main tree and use all your tech mods for them, than spend research on the complimentary tech.
And you might not have it in your main weapon group. For example, you would think if your opponent has high armor low health units, then psyonic damage would be helpful.
